What to check when an electric gate is stuck open

Start with the simple and safe checks first.

1. Check for obvious obstruction

  • Nothing blocking the photocells
  • No vehicles parked over safety loops
  • No debris in the sliding gate track
  • No physical obstruction near the latch or close position

2. Look at the safety devices

  • Photocell LEDs showing normal status
  • No cracked covers or water inside
  • Safety edges secure and undamaged
  • No loose or cut visible wiring

3. Watch how the system behaves

  • Does it try to close and then re-open?
  • Does one leaf move and the other stay still?
  • Does the control board click with no movement?
  • Does the gate only respond on hold-to-run?

4. Check manual movement

  • Only if you know how to release the gate safely
  • The gate should move reasonably smoothly by hand
  • Dragging, stiffness or binding suggests a mechanical issue
  • Do not force a heavy gate if it feels jammed
Do not do this: do not permanently bridge out photocells, loop inputs, safety edges or other safety devices to force the gate shut. That can create a dangerous system and hide the real fault.
