What to check when an electric gate is not closing

Simple checks first. Safe checks only.

1. Check for obvious obstruction

  • Nothing blocking photocells or safety edges
  • No stones, leaves or debris in a sliding gate track
  • No latch or keep obstruction on swing gates
  • No vehicle over a safety loop

2. Look at the safety devices

  • Photocell LEDs behaving normally
  • No cracked covers or water inside
  • Safety edge transmitters secure and dry
  • No loose or cut wires visible

3. Listen and watch closely

  • Does the board click but the motor not move?
  • Does the gate move then reverse at the same spot?
  • Does only one leaf move on a pair of gates?
  • Does the system work differently in open and close cycles?

4. Check manual movement

  • Only if you know how to release it safely
  • The gate should move reasonably smoothly by hand
  • Any stiffness, dragging or binding is a warning sign
  • Do not force a heavy gate if it feels jammed
Do not do this: do not permanently bridge out photocells, edges, loops or safety inputs just to get the gate working. That can create a dangerous gate and hide the real fault.
